I think it must have been in 1999 when I first installed linux. It was a commercialy available Red Hat version with a book included, which I borrowed from the local PC store.
I still remember how terrible it all looked, but at the same time, the stabillity (compared to my Win98 machine), was really impressing me. Ever since that first experience I kept looking at linux, although switching to linux as my primary OS took a few more years.
